I bought the StenEd Realtime Theory book, current edition. Then I read the preface.
StenEd says this is not “just another textbook.” Years of study. Computational analysis of the English language. Modern systems analysis. Every school of machine shorthand examined. Individual principles evaluated for how many words they affect and how much conflict they create.
The theory describes itself as “truly conflict free.”
This theory doesn’t walk into the room quietly. It arrives in a lab coat carrying a clipboard.
Then I turned to the high-frequency word list and found:

What happened in the laboratory?
Because you can analyze English with every computer in the building, but eventually a reporter has to put her hands on the keys and write DUZ.
That is where the research should have started.
So here is the standard, and it is the only one this article needs: every additional difficulty must earn its place. Not explain its place. Earn it. There may be a perfectly consistent rule behind an awkward outline. Fine. The rule has an alibi. What did the reporter receive?
The common-word test
A bad outline for a rare word is a pothole. A bad outline for a common word is the road.
StenEd’s high-frequency list includes:

most — MO*ES
much — MUFP
must — M*US
use — YAOUS or YAOUZ
These are not obscure medical terms waiting behind a bush to surprise the reporter twice a year. These are the words the day is made of.
A common word should be among the easiest movements in the system. Instead, StenEd takes ordinary speech and installs extra equipment so the outline will comply with a rule.
The witness says must. The reporter thinks, “Right. M*US. Let me bring another finger and an awkward reach into this.”
For must. A word people say every eleven seconds.
Context belongs after capture, not before it
Here is a bright-line rule for steno design: if the system makes the reporter think about context before choosing the stroke, the design has failed.
Consider use. StenEd assigns YAOUS when use is a noun and YAOUZ when it is a verb. Yes, the pronunciation changes slightly. The spelling does not. Either way, the transcript prints the same four letters:

Yet the reporter must hear the word, determine how it functions in the sentence, choose the ending, and make a different physical movement. During live testimony.
“I didn’t use it because I had no use for it.”
The first use is a verb. The second is a noun. The theory is standing beside the reporter saying, “Technically—”
Yes, thank you. The witness is now three sentences ahead.
The theory distinguishes something the transcript does not distinguish. The reporter receives more thinking, more risk, and two movements to learn. The transcript receives the same four letters.
The capitalized pairs make the same demand. Senate — SNA*T but senate — SNAT. Jury — J*UR but jury — JUR. President — P*T but president — P-T. Here, at least, the output genuinely differs, so the distinction buys something. Look at what it costs. Capitalization is an editing decision. The theory moved it into the live take. The reporter must resolve a proofreading question before her hands are allowed to move — while the witness keeps talking.
Context can help resolve language after capture. It should never be required to capture it. The best outline is the one that comes out automatically when the reporter hears the word. The moment the system inserts a decision between the word and the hands, it has created hesitation by design.
The asterisk tax

Sit with that one. The most urgent word in a courtroom or deposition — the word that has to fire before the witness answers — and the theory put a star in it.
Also starred: most (MO*ES), must (M*US), other (O*ER) — frequency rank 17 — March (MA*R), it’s (T*S), let’s (L*ETS), what’s (WHA*S), who’s (WHO*S).
An asterisk is not free. It adds coordination difficulty and another chance to miss the stroke. When the word is common, that cost is charged all day long.
The theory may have a reason for every asterisk. That is not enough. What does the reporter receive? Does the star make the word easier to retrieve? Easier to execute? Less likely to cause hesitation? Or did the theory simply need somewhere else to store the word?
That is not human-centered design. That is dictionary parking. “We already used the easy space. Put must over by the asterisk.”
The asterisk is not parsley. The reporter’s finger has to go hit it. And that finger was already working.
The contraction control panel
he’d — HAO*ED / he’s — HAO*ES

she’d — SHAO*ED / she’ll — SHAO*EL
we’d — WAO*ED / we’ll — WAO*EL / we’re — WAO*ER

You can see the system. The families are neat. The endings correspond. The stars preserve distinctions. Everything looks organized on the page.
But the reporter does not perform on the page. The reporter performs in motion. At speed, these become families of similar movements that must be told apart instantly. Which vowel cluster? Which ending? Where does the star go? Was that he’d, he’s, she’d, she’ll, we’d, we’ll, or we’re?
A visible pattern helps learning only when it makes performance easier. When the pattern adds fingers, lookalike forms, and more distinctions, neatness in the textbook becomes risk in the hands.
The suffix assembly line

Three strokes. For factually. Was there a zoning problem? Could we not fit the word into anything smaller?
The line keeps producing:
potentially — PO/TEPB/-RBL/HREU
pretentiousness — PRE/TEPB/-RBS/*PBS
misdemeanor — MIS/DMAOE/NOR
Misdemeanor. Three strokes, for a word criminal court says fifty times before lunch.
And PO/TEPB/-RBL/HREU is not an outline. It is a mailing address. You don’t write it. You forward something there.
The theory can explain how every piece arrived. That does not establish that the word should have been built that way. A suffix rule exists to make words easier to write. It does not exist to prove the suffix department stayed fully staffed regardless of what happened to the reporter.
Then StenEd gives us “for”
for — F-R
Short. Direct. Easy to execute. Exactly right for one of the most common words in the English language.
There it is. They know how to do it. Nobody analyzed the sentence. Nobody installed a suffix. Nobody called the asterisk in on its day off. Just write the word.
F-R matters because it proves clean design was available. The hard outlines were not unavoidable. They happened because other priorities were allowed to outrank the human at the machine. Sometimes the writer won. Sometimes the rule won. The reporter discovers which, one word at a time.
Conflict-free for whom?
StenEd places enormous value on being conflict-free. But a conflict does not disappear because the dictionary contains two clean entries. Sometimes it has merely been transferred. The software gets separate outlines. The reporter gets another distinction to remember — use, all over again.
The there- and where- families show the scale. The book assigns separate forms for thereabout, thereabouts, thereafter, thereat, thereby, therefor, therefore, therefrom, therein, thereof, thereon, thereto, thereunder, and thereupon — then does it again on the where- side. Many differ by a final key or a star.
The dictionary may be conflict-free. The reporter’s memory is now hosting the conflict convention. There is a table in the lobby. Everybody has a name tag.
The reporter is the product
Here is what this design does to the person using it.
The profession says the goal is writing that becomes automatic — hands moving before thought. Then the theory hands the student outlines that require a decision before the stroke. Noun or verb. Star or no star. Capital or lowercase. Which member of the family.
A movement can become automatic. A decision can’t.
So the theory teaches the reporter to think, and the profession grades her on not thinking. When she can’t make her writing automatic, she blames herself. She shouldn’t. There was nothing there to automate.
The rules are not the product. The clean dictionary is not the product. The beautifully organized suffix chart is not the product. The reporter’s performance is the product. When the rule and the reporter come into conflict, the rule should give way.
Not the reporter.
