Why Speed Is the Wrong Focus Now

For decades, stenography measured success by one dominant metric: speed.

How fast you could write.
How high you could test.
How far you could push before something broke.

Speed became proof of competence, proof of seriousness, proof that you “belonged.”

That made sense in a very specific world.

It makes far less sense now.


Why Speed Once Mattered

In the past, stenography operated as a closed system.

  • Human reporters were the only option

  • Courts and agencies had no substitutes

  • Supply was limited, but demand had nowhere else to go

In that environment, speed worked as a filter.

It answered the internal question:

Who is good enough to do this job?

Speed didn’t just measure performance.
It measured endurance, discipline, and tolerance for difficulty.

It wasn’t about scaling the profession.
It was about selecting survivors.


What Changed

The market no longer asks that question.

Today, the question is simpler and more unforgiving:

Can this job be covered, reliably, today?

Availability matters more than peak performance.
Consistency matters more than heroic effort.
Turnaround matters more than personal limits.

This shift didn’t happen because reporters got worse.

It happened because alternatives appeared.

Digital recording, AI-assisted transcription, and hybrid workflows don’t need years of training. They don’t fatigue. They don’t attrit. They scale instantly.

They don’t have to be perfect.
They just have to show up and work.


Why Speed Is the Wrong Focus Now

AI doesn’t compete with humans by being faster at individual tasks.

It competes by being:

  • Always available

  • Cheap to duplicate

  • Easy to deploy

  • Unaffected by fatigue

A profession that defines excellence by peak human speed is competing on the one dimension humans can’t scale.

Speed selects for outliers.
Markets select for coverage.

Those are different goals.


The Hidden Cost of Speed Obsession

When speed becomes the main goal:

  • Training favors brute force over efficiency

  • Dense, fragile systems are rewarded

  • Attrition is normalized

  • Burnout is reframed as rigor

The pipeline produces a small number of elite survivors — but never enough people.

That scarcity used to protect the profession.

Now it exposes it.


What the Market Actually Rewards

Today’s market rewards deployability.

That means:

  • Can someone do the job without breaking down?

  • Can they work full days, full weeks?

  • Can they be trained in a reasonable amount of time?

  • Can supply expand when demand spikes?

Speed alone answers none of those questions.


The Quiet Irony

Stenography was built to prove who was good enough.

The market now rewards whoever can show up and get the job done.

That doesn’t mean quality doesn’t matter.
It means availability matters first.

And once availability is solved elsewhere, quality arguments arrive too late.


Why This Was Hard to See

Inside the profession, speed felt like excellence.

Outside the profession, speed looked like a bottleneck.

As long as there were no substitutes, that mismatch didn’t matter.

Now it does.


The Real Measure That Was Missed

The question that should have been asked all along wasn’t:

How fast can a human write?

It was:

How many competent humans can we train, keep healthy, and deploy consistently?

Speed optimization actively worked against that goal.


Where This Leaves Us

This isn’t an argument against skill.
It isn’t an argument against quality.
It isn’t nostalgia or doom.

It’s a systems observation.

A profession optimized for proving worthiness struggles in a world optimized for delivery.

Until that mismatch is acknowledged, no amount of speed — human or otherwise — can fix it.
